Ngorongoro Conservation Area

This is more than 8,000 sq. km large area, has three species co-existing: wildlife, livestock and human beings. The area can therefore not qualify as a National Park as long as humans interests of habitation and depasturage continue to be accommodated. Nevertheless, due to scrupulous restriction of human activities, the area remains nature’s paradise.
The Conservation area derives its name from the famous NGORONGORO CRATER the sunken cap of an extinct but truly stupendous volcano which is regarded as one of the wonders on the world.

There are 25,000 larger animals within the crater itself, mostly Zebra and wildebeest. However, this is undoubtedly the best place to see black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the magnificent black-maned males. There are lots of colourful flamingoes and a variety of other water birds around the soda lake on the crater floor. More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater.

Other game: leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephants, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and lots of other members of the antelope family and smaller mammals of sorts.
Early man himself made an appearance in oldupai gorge about 2 million years ago. Some patterns of life, death, adaptation and migration are as old as the hills themselves.

Unique and different from other parks, as settlement within conservtion area is allowed. The Maasai people live here and are allowed to keep their livestock inside of the Conservation area.
