Serengeti National Park

“One of the most unique area in the world”

The name Serengeti is derived from the Maasai work siringet, which means ‘ endless plains’ . the Serengeti plains were formed three to four million years ago when ash blown from the volcanoes in the Ngorongoro highlands covered the rolling landscape. It is believed that this layer of ash preserved traces of early man established rich solid, which supports the southern grass plains.

Recent surveys have indicated an animal population of more than four million. Serengeti has a very large concentration of wildebeest, whose annual migration adds to the uniqueness of the Park. The principal features of the Serengeti National Park are the short and long grass; open plains in the south, the Acacia savannah in the central area; the hilly, more densely wooded northern section; and the extensive woodland and the black clay plains dominated by the central ranges of mountains in the western corridor. Throughout the whole park, there is a variety of sceneries – plains, rivers, lakes, hills and rock outcrops (kopjes).
