What and Why the African Big 5?

The true fact why they were named “African Big 5” is that they were coined by big-game hunters and are not derived from the size of the animals. These animals proved to be the most difficult to hunt, mostly due to their ferocity when cornered. Ah-ha! Are you surprised!

The Big 5 were renowned by the trophy hunters as being the most challenging and dangerous animals to hunt on foot due to camouflage or aggression. Therefore, there was a great deal of prestige to be gained from killing one. What a bunch of jerks!

At present days, you will only be able to capture as many shots as you can with your camera and nothing else, so good job on the protection.

Who are the African Big 5?

  2. Leopard (Panthera Pardus)
  3. African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana)
  4. Black Rhinoceros (Diceros Bicornis)
  5. African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer)

Lion (Panthera Leo)

The King of the Jungle; Seeing a pride of lions close in their own habitat will leave you with an indelible memory.
The males have gorgeous manes, while the females do the lion’s share (pun intended) of the hunting and child-rearing.

Leopard (Panthera Pardus)

They are known as the “Prince of Darkness” as they walk with elegant grace and have an amazing coat color. How lucky would you be! When you see a leopard walking around the wilderness While doing a game drive, you will be most likely to spot a leopard resting on a large branch of the tree. So do not forget to pay attention by looking up at some of the tree branches

African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana)

The world’s largest land animal that weighs 7 tones (7,000 kilos) qualifying as ‘big’ in every sense of the word. Nothing scarier than being chased by an animal that weighs 7,000 kilos!. The herd is led by the matriarch (Alpha Female) seeing one in its natural habitat is simply thrilling

Black Rhinoceros (Diceros Bicornis)

The rhino weighs in at 2,500 kilos and is a pre-historic heavyweight animal and gives birth only once every 5 years. The white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum), while not a member of the traditional Big 5, is a larger variety of rhinoceros that many people count as part of the Big Five for game-viewing purposes.

African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer)

The Buffalo is one of Africa’s most dangerous animals with very few predators. Is hard for even lions when hunt them and if lions might try to go for a calf, but are likely to pay the price later when an angry herd takes revenge.

In fact, the buffalo is considered the most dangerous of the animals on this list! ‘They look at you like you owe them money – makes them thrilling to see. So, note that the buffalos are not quite the lazy bush cow you might imagine!
